e-spool® replaces cable drum and increases availability of coil crane in steelworks

Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH is a subsidiary of the Salzgitter Group and produces over 4 million tonnes of crude steel every year. A new cable routing concept was sought for a coil crane in the producer's steelworks. Previously, this task was performed by motorised cable reels, which, however, required a high level of regular maintenance and were therefore very time-consuming and costly. In addition to the limited service life in the steelworks, the low data rate and transmission quality of the bus connection also posed a major problem for the producer. This led the operator to look for a new, better solution.

Although it was still a prototype in 2013, when the changeover to the new system was due to take place, and had not yet been used in a similar environment, the technical staff at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH decided in favour of our e-spool® energy chain system. After extensive consultation, the customer was confident that the use of this energy management solution would ensure reliable and cost-effective operation. Due to the novelty of using an e-spool® in this application at this time, the changeover was characterised by particularly intensive cooperation between the customer and our technical staff. The first prototype was quickly and continuously improved and an operational product was created. The conversion was carried out step by step and during ongoing operations.
Today, the e-spool® can accommodate and move a large number of cables in a very small installation space. An exciting feature is the integrated retaining spring, which keeps the chain securely tensioned and fully reeled in at all times. While the system has improved transmission quality, it is also robust and easier to maintain at the same time. Since the system was installed in October 2013, it has been running smoothly during operation.
