Components for aerospace engineering

In aerospace and related disciplines, such as space observation, component reliability and robustness are especially important. Our energy chains and cables are the result of over 60 years of experience with high-performance plastics. For this reason, they are used in aerospace applications all over the world. Areas of use include space telescopes and rocket launch pads. Thanks to our engineering team and with certified chainflex cables, we also offer ready-to-connect complete systems that are tailored to meet your needs.

With our dry-running bearing technology, high load capacities can be realised in harsh environments. Application examples include space exploration vehicles, such as the Mars Rover, and model and prototype construction in research and development.

Success stories

AIMIS-FYT student project: 3D printer for space

3D printing in outer space

Transporting structural parts such as solar panels and satellite antennae to space is inefficient and expensive. The AIMIS-FYT team of students from Munich are working on ways of manufacturing such parts in space by means of 3D printing. To conduct experimental tests in zero gravity, the team built a special 3D printer. The drive technology uses drylin SAW linear axes. They are lightweight and entirely maintenance-free.
GESTRA radar system

Energy supply in GESTRA radar system

GESTRA is a radar-based system developed by the Fraunhofer institute that is used to search for and map space debris. The development partner AlpinaTec GmbH relies on compact e-chain systems from igus for the high-precision three-axis positioning system. They ensure a reliable energy supply and the smooth guidance of a wide variety of media cables in a confined space.
Overview of aerospace applications

...and many further success stories

In this selection of more than 40 application examples, you can find out how our energy chains and bearing products are used in aviation and aerospace, where they fulfil different requirements. Here, it was necessary to overcome challenges such as high loads, extreme temperature differences, confined spaces or specifications requiring low weight.
